Causes of Foot Pain
Inflammation of the bones, ligaments or tendons in the foot can result in pain. We have collated a few common causes below:
- Achilles tendinitis
- Achilles tendon ruptures
- Diabetic neuropathy
- High heels or poorly fitting shoes
- Ingrown toenails
- Morton's neuroma
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Plantar fasciitis
- Psoriatic arthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Septic arthritis
You can opt for either inserts or orthotics, based on the type of foot ailment and the severity of your condition.
Foot inserts are made up of gel, plastic or foam, designed to relieve joint pains. They provide arch support or extra cushioning for your entire foot or around your toes and heel. They are not customized and are easily available in all pharmacies. These provide short-term relief and are generally more suitable for people who do not experience constant pain. They typically last for about 6 months.
If you suffer from severe pain, orthotics could be a better option for you. These are custom-made and fit you perfectly, increasing their effectiveness. They correct biomechanical issues and treat pain caused by medical conditions such as diabetes and arthritis. Orthotics improve your posture and can last for up to five years.
Magnetic insoles are shoe inserts containing static magnets. They increase blood flow to the feet and lower legs while modifying nerve impulses. They also increase oxygen flow to tissues and reduce the acidity of bodily fluids in the magnetized area.
Treatment of muscle pain and stiffness through magnetic therapy dates back centuries. One of the earliest recorded uses has been found in the Hindu Vedas from 600 BC. The scriptures indicate lodestones being used to treat various ailments and diseases. However, it is believed that Chinese healers have been using it long before that (since 1200 BC) to correct unhealthy imbalances in the flow of qi or energy.
The human body generates its own magnetic fields. This is due to the extraordinary amount of electrical activity in our cells. These fields control our basic chemistry and if a cell is injured, this activity slows or stops completely. Magnetic field therapy states that exposure to an external therapeutic field supplies the cell with the necessary energy.
Benefits Offered by Magnetic Insoles
Magnetic insoles have been beneficial in treating symptoms like neuropathic pain. Peripheral neuropathy is a condition where a patient experiences numbness, tingling or burning sensations as a result of nerve trauma. It can impair muscle movement and prevent normal sensation in the limbs. This is commonly found in people suffering from diabetes.
Disadvantages of Magnetic Insoles
Magnetic insoles are not for everybody as they produce adverse effects in some patients. Some of the drawbacks are mentioned below:
- Consistent foot pain is not normal and could be an indication of an underlying condition. Using over-the-counter insoles without a proper prescription can be very harmful. It is crucial to get evaluated by a podiatrist to determine the appropriate diagnosis and treatment options.
- Heel pain is usually caused by a condition called plantar fasciitis, in which, the thick band of tissue running across the bottom of your foot gets inflamed. It is common in runners, people who are overweight and those who wear shoes with inadequate support. Magnetic insoles have no advantage over similar, non-magnetized ones in such cases.
- Magnets are considered to be safe when placed on the skin, except in people with pacemakers, defibrillators or insulin pumps. Magnetic interference may hamper or stop the functionality of metal implants.
- These have not been tested for safety in pregnant women and infants.
There is very little scientific evidence to support the use of magnets to treat any medical condition. Some patients experience relief mainly because of the placebo effect (a person getting positive results from the treatment only because of their firm belief in it).
