• Try to keep your feet clean and dry
Wash with water and soap every day. Ensure that you clean in-between your toes also and always wipe with a clean towel after washing.
• Do not go barefoot in public
Fungus usually grows in moist places. This is why it’s important to wear flip flops or sandals in areas like showers and locker rooms.
• Trim your toenails short
This aids in preventing debris from growing under the nails and also reduces the risk of injuries. Ensure to cut them straight across as it keeps them strong. Always use properly sanitized clippers for the job.
• Wear only shoes that fit properly
Your shoes shouldn’t touch your toenails. It’s always better to wear them with a wide toe box so your toenails don’t jam at the end of the shoe. Also, ensure that there’s enough air to circulate around your feet.
• Change your shoes and socks often
Do not use your socks more than once without washing. Place your shoes out in the open so they can dry properly. Using a single pair of shoes increases the chances of getting a toenail infection. So it’s better to buy a few good pairs and alternately use them.
• Regularly disinfect
Use an antibacterial spray on your shoes and wash all your socks in hot water with bleach. If you have had toenail fungus before, an anti-fungal cream can prevent it from coming back.
